Germany motor insurance type classes adjusted for millions of drivers
German insurers have adjusted motor insurance type classes, affecting millions of drivers. According to the German Insurance Association (GDV), type classes for 7.4 million vehicles will increase, while 5.1 million vehicles will see more favorable classifications.
These adjustments reflect changes in accident statistics and repair costs across more than 33,000 registered car models in Germany. While the changes impact millions, approximately two-thirds of car owners will see no change in their current classifications.
GDV Managing Director Jörg Asmussen noted that higher repair costs and expensive spare parts generally lead to higher classifications in casco insurance. For example, the Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid is ranked in a high class (30), whereas budget models like the Renault Twingo remain in the lowest class (10). Historical small cars, such as the BMW Isetta and Citroen 2CV, continue to benefit from particularly low insurance rates.
