Electric vehicles save oil importers $20 billion in costs

Electric vehicle (EV) fleets saved oil-importing nations approximately 20 billion US dollars in crude oil costs between March and August 2026, according to an analysis by the energy think tank Ember. The fleets replaced an estimated 200 million barrels of crude oil during this six-month period.

China accounted for the largest share of these savings at 14 billion dollars, followed by EU member states with a combined 3.1 billion dollars. Within the EU, Germany and France recorded the highest savings. In Denmark, the EV fleet already replaces an amount of oil equivalent to 13 percent of the national annual consumption.

Globally, battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales rose by 11 percent in the first eight months of 2026 compared to the previous year. However, the US market share for BEVs in light vehicles was only 6 percent during this period, trailing behind 49 other countries studied by Ember, including India, Brazil, Italy, Malaysia, and New Zealand.

In Germany, rising fuel prices are driving demand for EVs, though market studies from the Center Automotive Research (CAR) indicate that price gaps are widening. In October 2026, the average price difference between EVs and combustion engine vehicles grew to over 2,900 euros, up from 1,328 euros in December 2025. While combustion vehicles saw average discounts of 19.6 percent, EVs saw lower average discounts of 16.3 percent.
