Germany care rates and pension regulations

Recent data regarding long-term care in Germany highlights significant regional variations in care rates across federal states. The care rate, defined as the proportion of the population classified as requiring care under long-term care insurance, provides a more accurate comparison between states of different sizes than absolute numbers alone.

In terms of financial support, care allowance (Pflegegeld) paid to individuals requiring care is classified as a social benefit rather than income. Consequently, receiving this allowance does not impact pension entitlements or count as additional earnings for the recipient. Furthermore, if a person requiring care transfers this allowance to a family member or friend as recognition for their caregiving efforts, these payments are not considered taxable income and do not increase pension claims.
