Germany care statistics: 268,623 children classified as needing care

In Germany, approximately 268,623 children and adolescents under the age of 15 were classified as requiring long-term care by the end of 2023. This group represents about 4.7 percent of the total 5.7 million people receiving care benefits in the country.

To be classified as requiring care, a child must demonstrate needs that exceed the ‘natural care requirements’ typical for their age group. Most of these individuals receive care at home, while a small number receive inpatient care. Long-term care insurance benefits for children are determined by their specific care level, similar to the system for adults. Additionally, as of January 1, 2025, most long-term care insurance benefits were increased by 4.5 percent.
