Germany celebrates Tag des offenen Denkmals with millions of visitors
The Tag des offenen Denkmals (Open Monument Day) has drawn millions of visitors across Germany, showcasing the nation's extensive cultural and architectural heritage. Coordinated by the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz (DSD), the 2026 event featured approximately 11,000 activities across more than 7,000 monuments in over 2,200 municipalities.
Central celebrations were held in Bamberg, which served as the national opening location with over 50 monuments open to the public. In Berlin, the event highlighted the theme ‘NetzWERKE: Denkmale & Infrastruktur’, offering access to over 350 landmarks and 1,000 events, including tours of the Philharmonie and various architectural sites near Potsdamer Platz.
Local participation varied widely, from Schloss Artelshofen attracting over 150 visitors to historical walks in Obertsrot and exhibitions in Hirschbach. The event provides rare access to sites that are typically closed to the public, such as bunkers, historic breweries, and renovated timber-framed houses, emphasizing the importance of preserving historical identity.
