Germany celebrates nationwide Open Monument Day

Germany is celebrating the ‘Tag des offenen Denkmals’ (Open Monument Day), a nationwide cultural event organized by the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz. Under the theme ‘NetzWERKE: Denkmale & Infrastruktur’, the event provides public access to historical buildings, technical installations, and cultural sites that are often closed to the general public.

Participating locations across the country include the Essen Cathedral and its treasury, the Stadtarchiv Ravensburg, and various industrial sites. In Hamburg, the Kunsthaus Baurs Park is hosting site-specific art installations, while in Travemünde, visitors can explore the Maritim Hotel and a former rescue station. Other highlights include technical tours of the Schauinslandbahn cable car, guided walks through Lingen’s railway station and powder tower, and exhibitions in Langenselbold and Blankenloch.

The event aims to strengthen awareness for monument preservation and showcase how historical infrastructure can be integrated into contemporary use. Programs range from guided tours and workshops to musical performances and specialized exhibitions, highlighting the diverse historical, technological, and socioeconomic significance of Germany's built heritage.
