Germany celebrates Open Monument Day with historical tours

Germany recently observed the nationwide ‘Tag des offenen Denkmals’ (Open Monument Day), highlighting historical heritage and urban development in various cities.

In Heidelberg, a guided tour through the Weststadt focused on the district's origins during the Gründerzeit period. The tour, led by Bernd Müller, explored how the area transitioned from industrial sites following the construction of the railway station in 1840 to a structured residential quarter designed by Reinhard Baumeister. Discussions also touched upon the importance of preserving local identity, including the maintenance of historical gas lanterns and the approach to street renaming.

In Memmingen, the event focused on the theme ‘NETZwerke: Denkmale & Infrastruktur’ (Networks: Monuments & Infrastructure). Visitors toured the historical gymnasium and the former fire station at Ratzengraben. These sites illustrate the city's 19th-century expansion and the development of municipal infrastructure, a period marked by political shifts after 1848 and the arrival of the Illerbahn railway in 1862.
