Germany celebrates Unity Day amid local debate over national colors
The German Unity Day, celebrated annually on October 3, commemorates the official end of the division of Germany. The holiday marks the 1990 accession of the five states of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR)—Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia—to the Federal Republic of Germany following the entry into force of the Unification Treaty.
In Halle, the CDU city council faction has expressed criticism regarding the municipal advertising for this year's celebrations. The faction, led by Christoph Bernstiel, noted that the promotional materials for the event, themed ‘Sing, play, be connected,’ utilize a color scheme of white, yellow, red, and blue, rather than the national colors of black, red, and gold. The CDU argues that the national colors should be prominently displayed to represent the values of freedom, democracy, and the overcoming of division.
