Berlin: German-Ukrainian entrepreneur charged with Russian espionage

The German Federal Prosecutor has filed charges against Ilona W., a German-Ukrainian entrepreneur and former PR professional, for suspected espionage on behalf of Russia. W. was arrested in Berlin in January and has been in custody since.

Prosecutors allege that W. provided sensitive information to a Russian intelligence officer, identified as Andrei M., who was operating under the guise of a vice-attaché at the Russian embassy in Berlin. Intelligence services suggest M. is actually an officer of the GRU, Russia's military intelligence service.

According to the indictment, W. assisted M. in building an intelligence network by providing information on high-profile political and military events. This included the NATO Discussion in November 2023 and the German-Ukrainian Economic Forum in December 2023. W. reportedly used a false name to facilitate M.'s access to a German military reservist meeting in February 2024.

Additionally, the charges state that W. attempted to recruit individuals from the German Federal Ministry of Defense and the arms industry to serve Russian interests. The German government has maintained that Chancellery security remained guaranteed throughout these activities.
