Germany: Child benefit eligibility for school graduates

In Germany, young adults transitioning from school may continue to receive child benefit (Kindergeld) of 259 euros per month until the age of 25 under specific conditions. While benefits are generally guaranteed until age 18, a new application is required after this milestone to extend payments.

To qualify for continued support until age 25, individuals must demonstrate they are engaged in an apprenticeship, university studies, or voluntary service. The transition period is protected even if the new activity begins up to four months after graduation. Additionally, benefits may continue if a student is actively and seriously searching for a placement; in such cases, providing proof of rejections to the Familienkasse or registering as a job seeker with the Agentur für Arbeit is recommended.
