Germany childcare enrollment faces declines in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Hamburg

Demographic shifts are impacting childcare enrollment in parts of Germany. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Education Minister Simone Oldenburg reported that the number of children in daycare and childcare services is projected to decrease by approximately 29 percent by 2035. As of March 1, 2026, roughly 110,600 children were in care, down from 117,470 in 2023. The minister attributed this decline to lower birth rates and the migration of young women from the region.

In Hamburg, recent data from the Statistikamt Nord shows a slight decline in the childcare rate for children under three years old. The rate fell to 45.5 percent, compared to 46.9 percent in the previous year. While 80.7 percent of children aged two to three are in daycare, the rate for infants under one year old remains very low at 1.2 percent.
