Germany clarifies online gambling advertising rules amid addiction warnings

In observance of the national day against gambling addiction, German authorities and addiction counseling services are highlighting the risks associated with gambling advertising. The Gemeinsame Glücksspielbehörde der Länder (GGL) has released a comprehensive FAQ document to clarify the regulations governing legal online gambling promotion in Germany.

Under the 2021 State Treaty on Gambling, regulated advertising is permitted but subject to strict limitations. For instance, advertising for online slots, poker, and casino games is prohibited between 6:00 and 21:00. The GGL aims to help citizens and operators distinguish between legal offers and unauthorized services while protecting minors and preventing addiction.

Simultaneously, addiction counseling centers, such as the AWO Bezirksverband Potsdam, are warning against the pervasive nature of gambling and sports betting advertisements. Experts note that these campaigns often use emotional messaging and links to sports and entertainment to minimize perceived risks. Advocacy groups are calling for stricter measures, including bans on sports sponsorship and the prohibition of financial incentives like bonuses or cashback systems, to combat the severe consequences of gambling disorders, which include financial ruin and mental health crises.
