Germany clarifies Wohngeld repayment rules and application delays
Wohngeld is a state‑provided housing subsidy in Germany that generally does not have to be repaid while the recipient remains eligible. Repayment becomes possible when beneficiaries fail to report changes such as a new address, a reduction in rent or an increase in income, which can lead to over‑payment. The 2023 "Wohngeld Plus" reform expanded eligibility to roughly two million households.
Processing times for new and continuation applications vary by municipality. Munich reports typical periods of three to five months, while the Berlin district of Friedrichshain‑Kreuzberg averages about four months and Augsburg between two and three months. Applicants are advised to inquire after four to six weeks if no response is received, and to follow up again after another four weeks. If six months pass without a decision, applicants may file an inactivity lawsuit, compelling the authority to issue a ruling on the pending application.
