Russia closes German Consulate General in Saint Petersburg
Diplomatic tensions between Germany and Russia have escalated following a series of reciprocal closures of diplomatic missions. Russia has closed the German Consulate General in Saint Petersburg, ordering German staff to depart the country by September 18. This move follows Germany's decision to close the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and the Russian House in Berlin.
The escalation stems from Berlin's accusation that Russia was responsible for a drone incident at Leipzig/Halle airport. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that the closure of the Bonn consulate serves as a signal that 'hybrid attacks' will not go unanswered, describing the measure as a significant restriction of Russian capabilities in Germany.
In response, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs characterized Germany's actions as 'hostile' and a 'groundless provocation.' Additionally, Russia has moved to close German Goethe Institutes within the country. The German Embassy in Moscow will assume the responsibilities previously held by the Saint Petersburg consulate.
