Germany: Coins emerge as the most popular collecting hobby

A representative survey conducted by the Civey opinion research institute on behalf of the World Money Fair reveals that coins are the most popular collecting object in Germany. Approximately 21.8 percent of respondents report collecting coins, surpassing other hobbies such as collecting stamps, souvenirs, or jewelry.

The data highlights a significant interest among younger demographics. Among individuals aged 18 to 29, 35.1 percent collect coins, which is more than double the 16.1 percent reported in the 50 to 60 age group. This trend suggests that the average age of collectors has decreased by 3.6 years since 2024.

While younger generations often prefer cashless payments for daily transactions, they remain active in coin collecting. Additionally, the survey indicates that many people view currency as more than its face value: 30.2 percent keep special pieces as memories, 23.3 percent as vacation souvenirs, 21.2 percent use cash for saving, and 12.1 percent treat it as a value investment.
