Germany commits €700m to security in northern Ghana

Germany is committing more than €700 million to security initiatives in northern Ghana to combat the potential spillover of violent extremism from the Sahel region. German Ambassador Frederik Landshöft disclosed the funding, noting that extremist groups such as Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the Islamic State in the Sahel are actively probing borders.

The financial package encompasses development, military, and police cooperation, as well as stabilization programs. Ambassador Landshöft emphasized that the largest portion of the funds is dedicated to building resilience and creating economic opportunities for young people to prevent exploitation by extremist recruiters. Additionally, Germany has provided the Ghana Immigration Service with equipment including bulletproof helmets, vests, motorcycles, and border shelters.
