Germany conducts nationwide emergency warning system test

Germany conducted its sixth nationwide warning day on September 10, 2026, to test the functionality of the country's emergency alert infrastructure. A central test alarm was triggered via the Modular Warning System (MoWaS) at 11:00 AM, reaching the population through various channels including television, radio, smartphones, sirens, and warning apps such as NINA and KATWARN.

Authorities reported high effectiveness, with estimates suggesting a warning reach of approximately 97 percent through at least one available channel. Smartphone warnings accounted for 75 percent of this reach. Technical innovations included the use of Cell Broadcast, which allowed for the first time the transmission of all-clear signals with reduced volume.

The exercise serves to ensure that in a real emergency, millions of citizens can be reached promptly with specific instructions, such as seeking shelter or closing windows. While the test was largely successful, officials noted that participation in specific warning methods can vary by municipality.
