Germany conducts Red Storm Charlie NATO transit exercise in Hamburg
Germany recently conducted Red Storm Charlie, a large-scale NATO transit exercise in Hamburg. The three-day maneuver involved approximately 1,700 participants, including 500 military personnel from the Bundeswehr, alongside police, emergency services, and civilian organizations. The exercise simulated a deteriorating security situation on NATO’s eastern flank, focusing on the deployment of alliance troops through German territory toward the east.
The scenario included challenges such as simulated sabotage, drone attacks, cyberattacks, and demonstrations. Red Storm Charlie is a component of the classified Operationsplan Deutschland, which outlines how Germany would prepare for a potential attack on NATO territory. This plan coordinates the movement, protection, and feeding of troops, as well as the evacuation of civilians and the wounded.
Experts have noted that Germany’s aging infrastructure, including roads and bridges dating back to the Cold War, remains a vulnerability for transporting heavy military equipment. The exercise emphasized the necessity of total defense, highlighting the critical cooperation required between military forces and civilian entities like the THW and emergency services to manage modern hybrid threats.
