Germany confronts surge in migrant-linked violent attacks

Hundreds gathered in Dresden for a second mourning vigil to honour victims of violence linked to migrants, including the case of Ann‑Marie, a teenager killed on a regional train by a Palestinian assailant. Organisers cited Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) data showing an 8.5% rise in serious sexual offences in 2025, with suspects disproportionately from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq.

A separate incident on 25 July 2026 saw a vehicle driven into a crowd at Berlin's Christopher Street Day parade, killing one woman and injuring at least 29 others. The Federal Prosecutor's Office (Bundesanwaltschaft) opened a terrorism investigation after a video on the suspect’s phone suggested allegiance to the Islamic State.

Both events have sparked criticism of the political response, with calls for stricter immigration controls and more decisive security measures.
