Germany considers driver's license sanctions for unpaid child support

The German Federal Government is considering stricter sanctions against individuals who fail to pay child support. Federal Family Minister Karin Prien (CDU) has proposed measures such as the revocation of driver's licenses for non-compliant payers.

Currently, the state provides maintenance advances to single parents when the other parent fails to pay support. However, the government struggles to recover these funds, with successful recovery occurring in fewer than one in five cases. This results in an annual loss of approximately three billion euros to the state. The proposed crackdown aims to reduce these costs and ensure that legal child support obligations are met.
