Germany considers funding UK Trident nuclear deterrent

Germany is reportedly exploring ways to support the United Kingdom’s £63 billion Trident nuclear deterrent program. This move is part of a broader effort by Berlin to strengthen the European nuclear umbrella and reduce reliance on the United States amid shifting American military policies and rising security threats from Russia.

Rather than developing its own independent nuclear arsenal, Germany is seeking closer integration with existing British and French nuclear capabilities. Discussions include potential direct financial contributions to the UK’s continuous at-sea deterrent or providing conventional military support to protect critical infrastructure.

One specific proposal involves the deployment of German-operated Patriot air defense systems to protect key sites, such as the Faslane naval base in Scotland, where the Royal Navy’s ballistic missile submarine force is stationed. British defense sources have indicated that such conventional assistance may be a highly credible and practical option for cooperation.
