Germany considers integrating trauma networks into national crisis preparedness plans

The German Society for Trauma Surgery (DGU) is proposing the integration of specialized traumatology networks into Germany’s national preparedness systems for catastrophes, major crises, and defense situations. The goal is to ensure hospitals can simultaneously treat a high volume of casualties and maintain operations during prolonged crises.

The proposal emphasizes utilizing existing medical infrastructure rather than creating a separate parallel system. Key requirements include the rapid distribution of victims to capable facilities, real-time tracking of surgical teams and specialized personnel, and the establishment of compatible logistical systems.

To ensure readiness, the DGU suggests periodic joint exercises between the civil health system and the Bundeswehr, alongside a clear legislative framework. Concerns remain regarding the funding of additional capacities that hospitals must maintain during normal periods to be ready for emergencies. These matters are expected to be discussed at the German Emergency Conference in Aachen.
