Germany considers raising microcar speed limit to 60 km/h

The German Bundesrat is reviewing an initiative from Saxony to increase the speed limit for microcars (L6e class lightweight vehicles) from 45 km/h to 60 km/h. These vehicles, often referred to as moped-cars, are increasingly popular among teenagers aged 15 and up, with the number of registered vehicles in Germany rising by nearly 80 percent since 2022.

Under current regulations, class AM drivers can operate these vehicles, which are limited to a maximum weight of 425 kg and two seats. While they offer advantages such as no vehicle tax and no requirement for a TÜV inspection, safety experts have raised significant concerns. Euro NCAP has previously rated tested microcars as ‘deficient’ in crash tests, and insurance accident researchers have cautioned against their use due to safety risks.

Drivers obtaining a class AM license at age 15 are subject to specific restrictions, including a national key number that limits driving to German territory until their 16th birthday. The cost of obtaining this license, including training and fees, typically ranges between 585 and 700 euros.
