Germany construction orders surge by 23% in August
Germany’s construction industry experienced a record surge in orders in August 2026, with the seasonally and calendar-adjusted intake in the main construction industry rising by 23% compared to the previous month. This represents the strongest monthly increase since statistics began in 1991.
The growth was primarily driven by large-scale contracts, with the civil engineering sector seeing a significant boost of 31.6%. In contrast, building construction saw a more modest increase of 12.4%. When comparing the three-month period from June to August 2026, the seasonally adjusted order intake was 7.6% higher than the preceding three months.
Despite this boom, the industry faces ongoing challenges, including high interest rates, rising material costs, and a shortage of skilled labor. While the surge in civil engineering suggests a focus on infrastructure modernization, such as roads and bridges, experts note that unusually large individual orders can cause significant monthly fluctuations.
