Germany construction sector sees rise in orders and employment

The German construction sector showed significant growth in June 2026. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), real orders in the main construction industry rose by 11.3 percent compared to the same month last year, while real revenues increased by 6.6 percent. This growth was driven by large contracts and strong performance in civil engineering, including roads and bridges, as well as public construction.

Employment in the sector also grew, with the number of workers increasing by 1.5 percent year-on-year to approximately 545,000. Residential construction is showing early signs of recovery, with building permits in the first half of the year rising by over 15 percent—the strongest growth for a first half since 2016.

Despite these gains, industry leaders remain cautious. Felix Pakleppa of the ZDB noted that while June was a good month, it is too early to declare a definitive turning point for the industry. High interest rates and rising construction costs continue to pressure the residential sector, leading the Hauptverband der Deutschen Bauindustrie to lower its annual revenue forecast from 2.5 percent to 1 percent in real terms.
