Germany economy shows signs of recovery after recession
Germany is showing signs of economic recovery after a period of recession and stagnation. Real GDP grew by 0.3% in the second quarter of 2026, a figure that was revised upward from previous estimates. This growth is largely driven by a resurgence in exports, which rose by 2.0% compared to the previous quarter, particularly within the European Union.
Industrial production is also seeing a turnaround, with manufacturing value added increasing by 0.9% quarter-on-quarter. The Ifo business climate index and the DIW economic barometer have both shown improvements, signaling rising confidence among companies despite ongoing geopolitical risks and energy cost concerns.
Consumer sentiment is also brightening, supported by rising income expectations. While domestic consumption and investment remain relatively weak, officials and experts point to innovation, particularly in artificial intelligence, and increased government spending on infrastructure and defense as potential long-term drivers for sustained growth.
