Germany: Criminal trials for Maschsee murderer and Holocaust Memorial accomplice

Alexander K., known as the ‘Maschsee murderer’ following a conviction for a 14-year-old murder in Hannover, is facing new charges in Düsseldorf. The prosecution alleges that K. committed hostage-taking and dangerous bodily harm against his partner. The indictment claims that on December 22, 2025, K. strangled the woman, and subsequently locked her in their apartment on New Year's Day, 2026.

In a separate legal development, the German Federal Prosecutor has charged Khalaf A. with aiding and abetting attempted murder and dangerous bodily harm. This charge is linked to an attack at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin on February 21, 2025, where Wassim Al M. injured a man. Al M. was previously sentenced to 13 years in prison for the attack, and prosecutors allege that Khalaf A. encouraged the perpetrator to carry out the act.
