Germany cuts climate and environmental spending in 2027 budget

The German federal government’s draft budget for 2027 proposes a nearly 20% reduction in the budget of the Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN). Climate‑change adaptation funding is set to be slashed by about 86%, leaving only roughly €5.5 million. Funding for marine nature protection is to be eliminated entirely after €60 million were allocated for 2026. Green Bundestag member Claudia Müller criticised the cuts, linking them to recent heatwaves and arguing they ignore the reality of the climate crisis and jeopardise both public health and the economy.

The proposed cuts are expected to affect ongoing climate‑protection projects and the upcoming Climate and Transformation Fund, raising concerns about Germany’s ability to meet its environmental targets.
