Europe data centers face grid capacity bottlenecks amid AI boom
The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is driving a massive surge in demand for electricity and data center capacity across Europe. The European Commission projects that EU data center electricity demand will rise to 114 TWh by 2030, representing approximately 3.2% of the bloc's total electricity demand.
However, the industry faces a critical bottleneck in grid capacity. Experts note that developers in parts of Europe may face wait times of up to ten years for sufficient grid connections. In Germany, specifically within the Rhine-Main region, the wait for large-scale data center connections (50 MW+) can extend up to 13 years. This infrastructure delay threatens to slow the continent's ability to compete in the global AI race, especially as the EU attempts to balance rapid digital expansion with its Green Deal climate policies.
