Germany debates energy reforms as climate activists protest data center expansion

The German Bundestag is currently debating key legislative changes regarding the energy transition and climate protection. Two legislative proposals, including a reform of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), have been introduced. A central point of contention is the so-called redispatch reservation, which critics argue could significantly block or restrict the financing of new wind energy installations.

In a related development, the organization AlgorithmWatch presented a petition containing over 160,000 signatures to members of the Bundestag. The petition, titled ‘Climate protection instead of AI madness’, calls for increased transparency and stricter climate protection regulations regarding the construction of data centers. Protesters expressed concerns that the rapid expansion of data centers is placing an unforeseen burden on the climate due to high electricity and water consumption, and argued that proposed changes to the Energy Efficiency Act may favor large tech companies at the expense of environmental goals.
