Germany debates security, migration, and Islamist extremism

During a televised debate for the Saxony-Anhalt state elections, political candidates discussed the relationship between migration and internal security. Green Party candidate Susan Sziborra-Seidlitz argued that security measures at major events, such as Munich's Oktoberfest, are a matter of police and judicial responsibility rather than migration. She noted that current security protocols at Oktoberfest were influenced by a 1980 right-wing extremist attack, though critics pointed out that recent expansions to security concepts were also driven by Islamist terror threats.

Separately, journalist Sascha Adamek warned of rising threats from Islamist infiltration within German institutions. Adamek cited concerns regarding the influence of groups like the Muslim Brotherhood, which aim to shift German laws toward Sharia principles. He highlighted a high level of threat from foreign extremism, noting that in 2025, there were 114 proceedings related to foreign extremism, significantly outnumbering cases of right-wing or left-wing extremism.
