Germany to add higher grid fees for rooftop solar owners

The Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) plans a new charge for households that generate electricity with photovoltaic (PV) systems. The additional basic price – estimated to stay below €100 per year – would be added to the regular electricity tariff and is intended to make self‑generating households contribute to the costs of the power grid.

Industry groups calculate the charge at roughly €150 – €155 per year, which would raise the total cost of a typical PV system by about €3,000 over a 20‑year lifespan – an increase of around 15 % compared with current costs. Solar‑industry representatives warn that the measure could make private rooftop installations considerably less attractive and hinder the rollout of Germany’s renewable‑energy targets.

The proposal has triggered strong criticism from the solar sector, which argues the added fee unfairly penalises owners who already reduce grid load, while the agency stresses the need for a “fair distribution of burdens” as the grid faces rising pressures from fluctuating renewable generation.
