Germany beats Ivory Coast 2-1 at World Cup as defender Nico Schlotterbeck injured

Germany secured a 2-1 comeback victory over Ivory Coast in the Group E match of the 2026 World Cup in Toronto. Deniz Undav, who came on as a substitute, scored the winning goal in the 94th minute after having already netted the equaliser in the 68th minute.

Defender Nico Schlotterbeck suffered a suspected ligament injury to his left ankle after a collision in the first half and was replaced by Antonio Rüdiger. Team doctor indicated MRI scans are required and warned the injury could end his tournament participation. Real Madrid have expressed interest in signing the 26‑year‑old centre‑back.

Germany, already qualified as group winners, will face Ecuador in their final group match, while Ivory Coast remain in contention after their earlier lead. The match was attended by 43,000 spectators at BMO Field.
