Germany has transferred the INS Drakon, the sixth and final Dolphin‑II class submarine, to the Israeli Navy. The handover occurred at ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems' shipyard in Kiel without a public ceremony, after which the vessel sailed under the Israeli flag for its first sea trials.

The 73‑metre‑long submarine is equipped with ten torpedo tubes—six of 533 mm and four of 650 mm—and features an enlarged sail that analysts speculate could house vertical launch systems for ballistic or cruise missiles, though neither Israel nor the builder has confirmed such capability. The delivery markedly strengthens Israel’s underwater warfare capacity.

During its trials, two Russian reconnaissance vessels monitored the submarine, reflecting heightened Russian interest in the platform’s novel design. The name “Drakon” was chosen as a compromise after families of the crew of the lost 1968 Dakar submarine objected to reusing that name.
