Germany deploys blue toll‑camera pillars to verify truck payments on autobahns

Germany has installed blue‑colored pillars equipped with four cameras along its autobahns to monitor trucks that are required to pay a toll. When a truck passes, the system captures a close‑up image of the licence plate, a side view of the vehicle, and data from the on‑board unit (OBU) to verify weight, class and payment status. If the toll is confirmed, the data are deleted; if not, a fine of up to €230 for the driver and €470 for the operating company is issued. The blue colour distinguishes these columns from regular speed‑checking radars, and they do not record private cars or motorcycles, which travel toll‑free. Similar truck‑toll technologies are used in the Czech Republic and Austria, while Italy’s blue columns are mainly speed‑cameras.

The system aims to simplify toll collection without physical toll booths, reducing visual impact and operational costs while ensuring compliance among heavy‑vehicle operators.
