NATO begins annual 'Steadfast Noon' nuclear deterrence exercise

NATO has launched its annual 'Steadfast Noon' nuclear deterrence exercise, involving forces from 17 member nations. The exercise, which is scheduled to run through the end of next week, focuses on the safe transport and handling of nuclear weapons, simulating the movement of ordnance from underground storage to aircraft.

Germany is actively participating by deploying three Tornado fighter jets from Tactical Air Wing 33 to the Aviano Air Base in northern Italy. These aircraft are part of NATO's nuclear sharing agreement, which allows allied nations to participate in the alliance's nuclear strategy. While the exercise involves high-level strategic training, officials emphasize that no actual nuclear warheads are being used; instead, training bombs are employed for all flight and handling procedures.

NATO officials, including nuclear policy chief Nassima Barrows, have described the maneuver as a routine, predictable event intended to demonstrate the alliance's readiness and unity. However, the exercise occurs amid heightened geopolitical tensions, with some observers noting its role as a signal to Russia. Experts estimate that approximately 100 US B61-12 bombs are currently stationed across six European air bases, including locations in Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany.
