Germany disability commissioner warns of inclusion setbacks

Jürgen Dusel, the German Federal Government Commissioner for the Interests of Persons with Disabilities, has warned of potential setbacks regarding inclusion and criticized planned budget cuts. Dusel noted that current debates increasingly treat people with disabilities as a cost factor rather than focusing on their fundamental rights. He stated that while his early tenure focused on expanding services and removing barriers, he is now fighting to prevent existing standards from being reduced.

Dusel also criticized the political landscape, suggesting that some have lost their moral compass. He specifically called upon the SPD to remain faithful to the principle of social justice.

Additionally, the Social Association of Germany (SoVD) has raised concerns regarding proposed reforms to child and youth welfare led by Federal Family Minister Karin Prien. The SoVD warns that these reforms could lead to regressions in support for children and adolescents with disabilities, specifically citing the risk of consolidating school assistance for multiple children to save costs.
