Germany: Disaster preparedness and emergency warning tools
Disaster preparedness and emergency warning systems are central to public safety in Germany. In Ennepetal, the Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis serves as the responsible authority for civil protection, coordinating responses to natural disasters such as floods, storms, and heatwaves, as well as technical emergencies like blackouts or water supply failures.
To assist with timely warnings, several digital tools are available. The WarnWetter app provides precise data from the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD), while the NINA app, managed by the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance, offers alerts for severe weather, large fires, and traffic issues. Additionally, the Fraunhofer-Institut’s KATWARN app provides automated notifications for floods and earthquakes, and the Umweltbundesamt’s air quality app warns of high ozone levels, which is particularly critical for individuals with respiratory conditions.
