Germany discusses nationwide flexible public transport ticketing app
German transport ministers are discussing the implementation of a nationwide public transport ticketing system designed for occasional travelers. The proposal, championed by ministers from North Rhine-Westphalia and Hamburg, aims to provide a flexible alternative to the monthly Deutschlandticket subscription.
The proposed system would utilize a check-in/check-out method via a smartphone app, automatically calculating the most cost-effective fare for the user. This approach would eliminate the need for complex tariff zones or ticket machines. A key feature of the proposal is a price cap to ensure that monthly costs for occasional users do not exceed the price of the standard Deutschlandticket.
One potential model for this technology is the Swiss-based company Fairtiq, which is already in use in several German regions, including Halle and parts of Saxony and Thuringia. While the concept is being discussed at the transport ministers' conference, the current motion focuses on establishing a working group to develop a concrete concept, with North Rhine-Westphalia expected to lead the technical design.
