Germany dismisses fake firework ban claim as hoax

A social‑media post circulating on WhatsApp claimed that the German Interior Ministry had issued a decree banning private use of fireworks in category F2 from 1 August 2026. The message, signed with a fictitious ministry header, warned of penalties for violations and cited public‑safety and environmental reasons.

The Federal Pyrotechnics Association quickly refuted the claim, stating that no such ban has been decided at the recent interior‑minister conference. Current regulations still allow private fireworks for New Year’s Eve, and any restrictions would require formal legislation.

In response to the misinformation, a new campaign called “Feuerwerk bewahren” was launched to protect fireworks as part of Germany’s cultural heritage and to seek UNESCO intangible‑heritage recognition.
