Germany: Driver's license exchange deadline approaches in 2027

Drivers in Germany must exchange older driving licenses for new, counterfeit-proof EU card formats by January 19, 2027. This mandatory exchange is part of the third EU Driving License Directive, which aims to standardize documents across the European Union.

The upcoming deadline specifically affects license holders whose documents were issued between January 1, 1999, and December 31, 2004. While the exchange process does not require retaking driving tests, authorities warn of potential administrative delays. In Potsdam, officials are urging citizens to book appointments early to avoid the expected surge in demand near the deadline.

Nationwide, approximately 42 to 43 million documents must be replaced under a staggered schedule that concludes EU-wide by January 19, 2033. Some regions are already experiencing high workloads; for instance, the Dresden licensing authority has implemented temporary measures to manage a significant increase in applications.
