German economic institutes raise growth forecasts amid industrial recovery
Major German economic research institutes, including Ifo, DIW Berlin, IWH, RWI, and Kiel Institute, have significantly raised their growth forecasts for the German economy. The Ifo Institute now expects GDP growth of 1.4% for 2026, while the DIW Berlin has revised its current year forecast upward to 1.2%. Other institutions, such as IWH and RWI, predict growth of 1.3% for 2026.
This upward revision follows a period of stagnation and is driven by robust exports, increased government spending on infrastructure, climate, and defense—projected to reach 40 billion euros this year—and a recovery in industrial orders. In July, industrial orders rose by 2.5% compared to the previous month, largely bolstered by a 126% surge in the other vehicle construction sector, including military and aircraft manufacturing.
Despite this optimism, experts warn of lingering structural challenges. These include high energy prices, low water levels in major rivers like the Rhine affecting navigation, intense competition from China, and weak private consumption. Additionally, rating agencies have cautioned about rising debt service costs and the potential pressure on Germany's sovereign rating due to an aging population and low productivity growth.
