Germany economic sentiment declines as energy costs persist

Germany’s economic sentiment saw a decline in October, with the ZEW Economic Sentiment index falling to 28.1 points from 34.7 in September. This drop, which exceeded analyst expectations, marks the end of a five-month improvement period. ZEW President Achim Wambach noted that while the economy is gradually emerging from stagnation, the recovery is not self-sustaining due to high energy prices that suppress real incomes, increase production costs, and prolong inflation.

Despite the decline in forward-looking expectations, the index for the current economic situation improved significantly, rising to -35.9 points. Sector performance was mixed: while banking, insurance, services, and telecommunications saw declines, the steel, metal manufacturing, and electronics sectors showed more positive developments.

The Bundesbank also reported that Germany's economic recovery stalled in the third quarter of 2026, with real GDP likely stagnating after growth in the first half of the year. Factors contributing to this pause include low water levels on the Rhine affecting logistics, high energy costs, and weak private consumption. However, the central bank anticipates a year-end surge, predicting that economic output should grow noticeably in the fourth quarter.
