Germany economic summit focuses on resilience and trade
At the BGA-Unternehmertag 2026 in Berlin, leaders from business and politics gathered to discuss the future of Germany's economic location. Under the theme ‘Systemrelevant,’ the event focused on the competitiveness of medium-sized enterprises and increasing geopolitical challenges.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized that economic resilience is achieved through international cooperation and partnerships rather than isolation. He advocated for open markets and rule-based free trade, supporting further trade agreements with regions including MERCOSUR, Mexico, India, and Australia. Merz also announced plans for economic reforms, including accelerating planning and approval processes, reducing bureaucracy, and providing tax relief for companies. Additionally, he indicated potential short-term relief measures to address rising fuel prices caused by escalations in the Middle East.
BGA President Dr. Dirk Jandura highlighted the critical role of wholesale and foreign trade, describing the sector as a system-relevant pillar of the German economy that supports thousands of jobs.
