Germany economy grows 0.3% in Q2 2026
Germany's economy grew by 0.3% in the second quarter of 2026, according to revised data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). This figure is an upward revision from the initial 0.2% estimate and marks the third consecutive quarter of growth.
Growth was primarily driven by strong export performance, with goods and services exports increasing by 2.0% compared to the previous quarter. While exports provided momentum, other indicators showed weakness: gross fixed capital formation fell by 0.2%, particularly in machinery and equipment, and employment saw a decline of approximately 212,000 people compared to the previous year.
Economic experts have offered differing perspectives on the recovery. While the growth trend continues, Stefan Kooths of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy warned that the expansion is largely driven by expansive fiscal policy rather than a broad-based structural recovery. Additionally, the German state reported a significant deficit, spending 71.3 billion euros more than it earned in the first half of 2026, bringing the deficit to 3.1% of GDP.
