Germany: Electric vehicle prices rise amid high demand

Electric vehicle (EV) prices in Germany are increasing as demand grows and manufacturer discounts shrink. According to a market analysis by Center Automotive Research (CAR), the price gap between EVs and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles widened significantly in October. While the average price difference was 1,328 euros in December 2025, it rose to 2,917 euros in October.

This trend is driven by a reduction in average discounts for the 25 electric models studied, which fell from 17.9 percent in September to 16.3 percent in October. In contrast, discounts for ICE vehicles and plug-in hybrids saw slight increases. CAR Director Ferdinand Dudenhöffer attributes this shift to rising fuel prices making EVs more attractive, alongside production bottlenecks causing longer delivery times.

Separately, German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider has provided assurances regarding state purchase subsidies for electric vehicles. Despite high demand, Schneider stated that sufficient funds remain to support the subsidy program through the entirety of the coming year, with a total of three billion euros allocated for the purpose.
