Germany electricity costs: Tax cut proposals amid rising grid fees
German politician Steffen Bilger has advocated for extending electricity tax cuts to private customers, following similar measures already implemented for 600,000 companies. While Bilger did not specify a timeline or exact amount, he noted that the government must prioritize various measures, including strengthening public transport and expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
In contrast to the push for tax relief, electricity consumers may face rising costs due to changes in federal subsidies. The four major German transmission system operators—50Hertz, Amprion, Tennet Germany, and TransnetBW—report that average grid fees on the high-voltage level are expected to rise to 3.54 cents per kilowatt-hour. This increase is driven by a planned reduction in federal subsidies for transmission grid costs, which are expected to drop by nearly one billion euros to 5.525 billion euros by 2027.
Industry analysts suggest the impact on households may be mitigated, with Verivox estimating that only about one-third of the increase will be passed directly to end consumers, potentially raising the average electricity price by approximately one percent.
