Germany: Emigration trends shift toward lifestyle and work-life balance

The Global Mobility Study 2025/26, conducted by Auslandsjob.de and INITIATIVE auslandszeit, reveals a shift in motivations for working abroad. Among 1,588 respondents, only 16 percent cited career advancement as a primary driver. Instead, individuals are increasingly seeking lifestyle changes, with 56 percent prioritizing cultural experiences, 54 percent seeking better work-life balance, and 45 percent desiring a change of scenery.

Regarding the logistics of leaving Germany, recent social media rumors claiming the federal government plans to impose an emigration fee of up to 10,000 euros have been debunked. The Federal Ministry of Finance confirmed that no such levy is planned.

Additionally, experts advise emigrants to carefully weigh the costs of transporting vehicles. While moving a newer car within the EU may be cost-effective, exporting older vehicles to non-EU countries can become a financial burden due to high import duties and taxes.
