Germany ends mandatory continuing education for real estate agents

On 11 June 2026 the German Bundestag voted to abolish the mandatory continuing‑education requirement for real‑estate brokers under § 34c Abs. 2a GewO and § 15b MaBV. The measure was presented as a step toward reducing administrative burdens, with the draft stating that most traders act responsibly and keep their knowledge up‑to‑date without state‑imposed rules.

The Bundesrat’s final decision is pending and expected within weeks. The Bundesverband für die Immobilienwirtschaft (BVFI) warned that the repeal could lead to lower professional standards, urging industry bodies to develop voluntary quality seals to maintain client trust.

The change removes the legal duty for brokers to document regular training, shifting responsibility for competence entirely onto individual firms and market‑driven certification schemes.
