Germany faces extreme heat wave and severe thunderstorms
A prolonged heat wave is sweeping Germany, with the German Weather Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst, DWD) warning that temperatures could reach up to 45 °C. The agency also issued official alerts for strong thunderstorms, hail, wind gusts of up to 100 km/h and rainfall of up to 20 L per square metre.
The severe weather has caused widespread damage: trees have fallen on roofs, cars and railway infrastructure, halting ICE trains with 132 passengers and injuring several people, including seven in Hamburg when a tree struck a car. Hailstones up to 3 cm have been reported in parts of the country. A lightning strike in Harburg disabled two railway crossings, temporarily splitting the town.
While the heat is expected to ease mid‑week, with temperatures in Karlsruhe projected to fall to around 33 °C, the risk of further thunderstorms, heavy rain and localized flooding remains high across many German regions.
